Mine Design started in business way back in 1977 as a part time venture in the Gem and Lapidary Industry and soon became a full time business within a few short years. Mine Design is now a full time Colored Gemstone supplier noted for its high quality and custom cutting and is also a national representative for Intarsia by Jim Kaufmann and Soapstone Carvings by Sandy Cline.
In 1982 Mine Design became a Firm Member in good standing of the American Gem Trade Association, also known as the AGTA. The AGTA is a group of highly ethical, North American colored gemstone suppliers who promote colored gemstones to the Jewelry Industry and the General Public. All AGTA members are required to have an office within the United States or Canada and to abide with their Code of Ethics, which includes full disclosure of Gemstone Enhancements.

Promotion and sales of colored gemstones has to start with customer trust and understanding In 1983, Lance Kanaby and Paul Clifford, from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were the founders of the Gemological Society at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to help promote the education and understanding of Colored Gemstones and the Gemstone Industry.
The Gemological Society has turned into a very active group of gemstone enthusiasts seeking understanding and appreciation of all gemstones by means of monthly meetings and field trips to other museums, gem and mineral trade shows and other locations.
